Global Youth Service Day
Join the GYSD fun as an Adult Ally!
Friday, April 12, 2019
What will I be responsible for?
Your main responsibility is to keep your team safe. There will be 30-50 teen participants at each project site. Each teen leader will be responsible for guiding 10-15 of their peers throughout the project. Your role is as emergency and logistical support and chaperone for your teen team leaders.
The teens have planned the project and will have knowledge about the "what", "why", and "how" for each project site. You get to follow their lead as they guide their peers through the day of service.
Each Adult Ally will be given a roster that day with info about who is in your Hub (Team Leads and participants) and their emergency contact info; you'll want to be sure that everyone is accounted for and help monitor safety. You can participate with projects as you'd like and as the Teams request; you should not need to step in and facilitate or direct the projects.
What's the Schedule?
8:30 a.m. - Adult Allies & Teen Team Leaders arrive at The Warehouse
9:20 a.m. - Students will travel via bus from their school to the Warehouse
9:40 a.m. - Students arrive at The Warehouse (1525 S Rogers St)
10:15 a.m.-1:15 p.m. - Service projects at their sites with 30 min lunch included
1:15 p.m. - Buses bring everyone back to the Warehouse for a celebration
2:05 p.m. - Students will travel via bus back to their school
2:30 p.m. - Clean Up and Adjourn
3:00 p.m. - All Adult Allies are invited to join for reflection at Upland
What does a bus chaperone do?
You will park at your designated school and ride with the students to The Warehouse. You will be responsible for expediting the loading and attendance of students on your bus. When you arrive at The Warehouse, you will find your project team and ride with them to their project site on the designated bus. The same in reverse at the end of the day.
Can I choose the time that I participate?
We need all Adult Allies to commit to the full day 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.
It's a long day - but it's a blast! And all adult allies are invited to debrief with our adult team after the event at Upland!
What are the projects?
Read all about the projects here. You can express a preference when you register as an Adult Ally.
What should I wear to GYSD?
Each of you will get a t-shirt that morning; we recommend comfortable footwear and clothes you don't mind getting messy with paint, markers, dirt, or ice cream.
Where do we meet on April 12?
You will come directly to The Warehouse (1525 S. Rogers) - by bus if a bus chaperone, or by car if not - and head to your project site on the bus with the Team. Students will begin arriving at The Warehouse around 9:40 a.m. and depart for their Hubs at 9:55 a.m.
Is lunch provided?
No. All participants are asked to bring a sack lunch; we'll have light snacks available, but everyone is being asked to bring their own lunch. Lunch time at your project location will be a great time to get to know your team!
